Lacquered Heritage
Lacquer is created from the sap of a tree native to southern China and was originally applied as a protective finish for wood. Lacquer techniques were first highly developed during the Shang dynasty (1600–1046 BC), becoming a highly artistic craft. By the Han dynasty (206 BC – 220 AD), lacquer techniques had gradually spread to Korea and Japan.

European Japanning
When lacquer craftsmanship spread to Europe via the Silk Road, its gloss and durability immediately captured the interest of European high society. European artisans began to imitate the technique, developing what became known as Japanning. Japanning was not only a tribute to Japanese lacquerware but also a reinterpretation and adaptation of Eastern craftsmanship by European artists, symbolizing the fusion of Eastern and Western art. This craft gradually became an essential part of European aristocratic homes, symbolizing status and taste.

Heritage Reborn
Lacquer continues to thrive in modern design, blending tradition with innovation. Its sleek, minimalist aesthetic not only appeals to contemporary artists and designers but also serves as a bridge between ancient craftsmanship and modern creativity. The enduring elegance and versatility of lacquer make it a popular choice in various forms of art, furniture, and decor, where its refined finish and timeless appeal seamlessly integrate into today’s design landscape.
